Oblation Cup boosts alumni scholarship grant

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Australia – New South Wales Chapter held its third Oblation Cup Golf Tournament recently to raise funds for its Scholarship Grant.

Sixty-three players showcased their skills at the Fairfield Golf Course in Prairiewood, with Zaldy Capulong emerging as overall champion, Rene Uy (Grade A winner) and Joe Cura (Grade B winner) in tight competition.

Also hitting top marks were runners-up James Fatu (Grade A) and Willy Limjap (Grade B), “nearest to the pin” winners Roger de los Reyes, Bert Garcia and Bobby Lim as well as “drive and pitch” winner Bert Bugayong.

This annual Easter Monday event, held last 5 April and named after UP’s well-known icon, is chaired by Engr. Ferdi and Dr. Cora Francisco.

The tournament is just one of the events marking the association’s 30th anniversary.

The celebration continues with a seminar entitled “Beauty and the Beast”: Philippine Wildlife Conservation” to be presented by Dr. Corazon Catibog-Sinha on the 29th of May, 2:00PM at the Max Webber Library Function Centre in Blacktown.

UPAAA-NSW Oblation Cup raises funds for new scholar

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Australia – New South Wales Chapter recently held the second Oblation Cup Golf Tournament for the continuing benefit of its Scholarship Grant project.

Proceeds from this year’s tournament will support the Association’s new scholar, Miko Masangkay, a B.S. in Agriculture student from UP Los Baños.

The event, named after UP’s famous icon, was held at the Woodville Golf Course in Guildford and was participated in by 69 players from different Sydney golf clubs.

Hitting the top this year were Sata Latu (overall champion), Jeremy Licuanan (Grade A winner), Dodee Leones (Grade B winner), Bernie Balagtas (Grade A runner-up) and Jerome Gaerlan (Grade B runner-up) who each received a trophy. Leones was also among the “nearest to the pin” winners along with Wil Badiola, Rey Garcia, Carlos Perez and BJ Villa.

Now held annually on Easter Monday, the Oblation Cup was chaired by Engr. Ferdi and Dr. Cora Francisco with support from community-based businesses and UPAAA-NSW members.

 

Mantaring grabs I-Remit Golf Classic

The maiden I-Remit Golf Classic held at Glenmore Heritage Valley Golf & Country Club on April 26 was hardly fought by almost 100 golfers amid perfect sunshine but freezing temperature and windy conditions. It was the first fund raising project of the Sydney Interclub Golf Organising Committee (SICGOC) for its members.

Ricky Mantaring of the Divotees scored one under par 37 points using his 24 handicap under the stableford system to snatch the overall champion major prize of $300 plus a monumental trophy to take home and the right to engrave his name on the perpetual trophy. “It was a surprise for me and totally unexpected to best a very strong field of 90 other golfers who could have easily surpassed my score,” said a very elated and ecstatic Ricky.

Division winners were Jeremy Licuanan of Hampaslupa for Division A, scoring 35 points using 12 handicap; Stephen Mueller of Pogi for Division B with score of 36 points using 22 handicap and Rudy Neri of Jokers scoring 36 points using 25 handicap. As division champions, they each received $150, plus trophy for their great efforts.

Division runners up were Speedy Villanueva of Jokers for A Division scoring 34 points and using 14 handicap, Chris Sitchon of Fil-Oz for B Division also scoring 34 points with his handicap of 16 and Peter Anderson of Fil-Oz for C Division with his score of 35 points using 25 handicap. As runners up, they each received $100, cash plus trophy.

Novelty hole winners were Dennis Alvarez (Fairgolf) hole 1, Fred Bacucang (Pogi) hole 2, Alex Lee (Fil-Oz) hole 3, Karl Fifita (Divotees) hole 4, Romy Costelo (Pogi) hole 5, Stephen Mueller (Pogi) hole 6, Roger delos Reyes (ParE) hole 7, Rene del Rosario (Fil-Oz) hole 8, Jonathan Espejo (Jokers) hole 9, Ross Sandoval (Pogi) hole 19, Raul Ladera (Pogi) hole 20, Oscar Clemente (Fil-Oz) hole 21, Bernie Balagtas (Fil-Oz) hole 22, Neil Narvais (Pogi) hole 23, James Fatu (Divotees) hole 25, Ken Platon (Fairgolf) hole 26, and Lorenzo Aquino (Jokers) hole 27. All these winners received $20 each.

The Sydney Interclub Golf Organising Committee (SICGOC) was formed in 2000 for the purpose of organizing annual major Interclub golf tournament among its member clubs in order to improve their game of golf and enjoy the camaraderie, sportsmanship and friendship whilst playing the sport that they all loved. Current members who supported this project and their representatives were Fil-Oz Social Golf Club (Ric de Vera, Chairman), Sydney Jokers (Ralph Posadas, Treasurer), Fairgolf (Arnie Santos, Secretary), Hampaslupa (Ricky Yang), Golf ParE (Andy Porral) and Pogi Golf (Chris Caraballo).
