Following the detention and threatened deportation of Australian lawyer Professor Gill Boehinger from the Philippines on Wednesday August 8, the Action for Peace and Development in the Philippines (APDP) issued the following statement.
Statement on the detention of APDP member Professor Gill Boehinger
“Action for Peace and Development in the Philippines (APDP) condemns the detention and threatened deportation of Professor Gill Boehinger from the Philippines.
“Prof Boehinger is a long-term member of APDP. He has been a champion for human rights, justice and accountability of the powers that be. He speaks with integrity, courage and compassion in favour of human rights, justice and dignity.
“Like Sister Patricia Fox, Prof Boehinger has stood in solidarity with the Filipino people and amplify their condemnation of injustice, exploitation and human rights violations.
“The question is – why does such a voice of reason supporting justice and fundamental rights inspire such fear from the regime of President Duterte of the Philippines? Why does this regime want to divide the Filipino people from partners like Sr Patricia Fox and Prof Boehinger?
“If President Duterte and his regime were upholding the dignity and rights of the Filipino people, they would welcome any interest in the human rights situation in the Philippines. Sr Fox and Prof Boehinger are true friends of the Filipino people upholding the dignity and rights of Filipinos, defending the rule of law, and overcoming poverty, injustice and violations of human rights.
“Extrajudicial killings and human rights violations are typical of the Philippines under Duterte. Duterte, and the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has attacked human rights organisations and advocates. They seek to silence these voices. Now they seek to isolate Filipino human rights defenders from international allies and supporters. What fresh injustices will be perpetrated against Filipinos isolated from international human rights advocates?
“Prof Boehinger’s wife is a Filipina living in Mindanao. The regime seeks to separate a Filipino citizen from her husband, adding to the injustice of their actions.
* Release Professor Gill Boehinger from immigration detention!
* Allow Prof Boehinger to remain in the Philippines.
* Stop extra-judicial killings and human rights violations in the Philippines.
* Justice for all victims of State-sponsored terror and human rights violations in the Philippines.”
