About 1,000 members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) arrived in Bundaberg today (February 17) to help with flood cleanup efforts.

Leading the church volunteers were District Minister for Australia-Oceania Ranniel Serreno and Philippine-based Church General Auditor Glicerio Santos Jr.

The volunteers are from neighbouring congregations in Queensland, with a majority from New South Wales, Victoria, and Australian Capital Territory who travelled more than 20 hours to get to Bundaberg.

In an interview with The Filipino Australian Bundaberg correspondent Lee Espiritu-Pendleton, Bundaberg Mayor Mal Forman said, “…the International Aid for Humanity [of the Iglesia Ni Cristo] is a wonderful initiative and for the members displaying their true faith and working out and living out the words of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

“We are overwhelmed by their generosity.”

In addition to the $20,000 donation to Bundaberg’s relief fund, the group also donated $20,000 each to Bundaberg North and East schools.

The Church volunteers also distributed hundreds of bags containing personal hygiene items, such as soap and anti-bacterial cream.
