Kapitbahayan Co-operative Limited (KCL) this week became one of the inaugural recipients of Gawad Geny Lopez Jr Global Bayaning Pilipino. The results of the awards were released last Tuesday, July 3 with KCL being the sole awardee in Australia, according to sources.
Global Bayaning Pilipino (Global Filipino Hero) Awards are initiatives of the Philippine entertainment and broadcasting company, ABS-CBN Corporation, in honour of its founder Don Eugenio Lopez Jr. The awards started in 1994 as Bayaning Pilipino Awards and this year went global.
Together with KCL as inaugural awardees are organisations from the U.S., Canada, Asia-Pacific (covering Singapore and Hong Kong), Europe (covering Italy and U.K.), Middle East, and Japan.
KCL, a housing co-operative which started operations in 1995, is managed by volunteer board members acting as managers with Filipino language interpreter Ruben Amores and APCO founding president Cen Amores.
The co-operative is a recipient of a number of awards for its role in community housing.
Among others, KCL was awarded “Excellence in Assets Management” by the Association of Resource Co-op Housing and “Award for Excellence (Innovation in Service Delivery)” by the NSW Awards for Excellence in Community Housing Steering Committee in 2002, and 2004, respectively.
The Gawad Geny Lopez Jr Awards announced early this year the participation of Filipino organisations outside the Philippines.
The criteria for selection, according to the Awards website, focus on the contributions of the nominees in the community including measurable benefits to the community, “values of unity eliminating selosan (jealousy), inggitan (envy)” and other negative attitudes and practices, and promotion of Filipino values, culture and heritage.
Awarding is scheduled on Thursday, July 19 at the ABS-CBN headquarters in the Philippines.
