A Filipino section at The Filipino Australian?

Violi Calvert, a regular TFA contributor, was touched by the recent report of abuse on an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Kuwait, that she expresses her rage through an article written in Filipino. Her post is titled “May Iba’t Ibang Uri ng Demonyo sa Balat ng Lupa” (meaning, “There are different types of devils on earth”).

Will this new post in Filipino set out a new direction in our Community Blogs section? Who knows, it might. Already there are those who have expressed their desire to post blogs in Filipino.

Whilst emanila.com has a dedicated section about the Filipino language and related topics, we agree it might be a good idea to have a Filipino section at The Filipino Australian. We can also link the other articles now published at Philippines Studies to this site.

More on this in our future posts.

    Why Not?
Tagalog, along with English, is one of the many languages of the Philippines. There are certain expressions or ideas that are better expressed in its own language. Taglish is also a language native to the Philippines.
Might be better to have a specific page for this though. For example, although my maternal grandmother is an Ilocana from Nueva Ecija, I haven’t been taught that language and wouldn’t understand it.
Writing in a specific language would limit the message to only those who can read or understand that language. So if the writer’s purpose is to disseminate information, or gain support, then that message would only reach a limited audience.
But then again, there’s google translate, but i doubt it recognises all Philippine languages.

  2. Salamat sa yong input, Mitchell.

  3. I think this is a great idea! I agree with Mitchell that some ideas are better expressed in Tagalog.
As the Filipinos disperse all over the world, it will be a good way to anchor us back to our roots.
Marami sa ating mga kabataan ang hindi na nakakapag-salita ng Tagalog. Magandang paraan ito para ma-revive ang interest nila in it. I hope.
