The Australia Philippines Services League has finalised plans for its Philippine Independence Day celebrations, kicking off with a Filipino-motif display at Blacktown library 1 June and finishing with the annual dinner at Rooty Hill RSL 11 June.
Established in 2004, the APSL comprises veterans of various areas of conflict, former service personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Australian Defence Forces, and descendants of war veterans.
The Philippines commemorates her Independence Day 12 June, the 113th occasion since Filipino revolutionary Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo broke away from Spanish rule in Kawit, Cavite in 1898.
APSL Supreme Commander Col. Chris Pilao said the 11 June festivities begin 11am with the traditional flag raising ceremony, program and refreshments at Bowman Hall, Campbell Street, Blacktown.
Attendance at the event is free.
The wider community, those interested in Filipinos and the Philippines, and public officials have been invited to the Blacktown City Council-supported celebration, Col. Pilao said.
At 7pm, APSL holds its customary Independence Day dinner at Rooty Hill RSL.
APSL is also collaborating with ‘The way we are – a Filipino-motif display’ at Blacktown library 1-19 June with the theme Filipino cuisine.
Blacktown City hosts a large population from a Filipino background.
