On Saturday 5th June, representatives of The Philippines Consulate in Sydney, members of the Maharlika Riders Club Sydney and officials of the Philippines Community Council of NSW visited Bathurst for a flag raising ceremony in commemoration of 112th Anniversary of Philippine Independence.

The Philippine flag hoisted during the event is reputedly the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The flag was first raised in June last year, and generates great pride when raised.

Bathurst Mayor Cr. Paul Toole and local Member of Parliament, Mr Gerard Martin welcomed the attendees.

The Philippine Independence commemorative ceremony was supported by the Bathurst Regional Council and the Bathurst Lions club who raised both the Philippines and Australian flags.

The National Anthems were sung and a beautiful prayer was delivered by Reverend Oto Faiva from the Uniting Church.

The ceremony took place at 12noon, in Berry Park and was attended by members of the Australian Community of Bathurst and the Filipino community of Bathurst and the Central West, led by Nenita Weekes, president of the Filipiniana Friends Group.

Pupils and Teachers from the Penrith Filipino Community School, and Filipinos from Blue Mountains also attended.

After the ceremony guests and visitors proceeded to the reception at the St Michael and John Cathedral Hall for a lunch of traditional Philippines delicacies, and entertainment by Filipino singers and some accomplished cultural dancers from Penrith Philippine Language School.

A highlight was Mayor Paul Toole’s game attempt to dance the ‘Tinikling’, a traditional dance involving hopping between clashing bamboo poles. He survived and greatly impressed everyone present, with his friendly support and participation.
