Amigos Mechanical Repair repeat as champions of the NSW State Filos Basketball Champions Cup 2009, clipping the wings of the JayHawks, 36-30, in a tight and bruising second half action.

The multi-titled Amigos squad started strong and built up a 20-6 lead in the 1st quarter behind the hulking figure of 7′ Patrick Pilae 4 points and the inspired performance of power forward Jomar Dormido 11 points.

But playing coach Jo Paolo Policarpio would not have any of these with their reputation as one of the best Filos basketball squad at stake. He gathered his Hawkmen and devised a play that evolved on Hills district ABA player Reubert Tandog 12 points [Finals MVP] and allowed him to snake his way into the Amigos team defence.

The first half still ended in the Amigos favour, 23 – 10, as Virgil Alcantara 3 points and Iverbon Liceralde 2 points kept the JayHawks quintet at bay.

Bodies falling, arms flailing, and in your face defence were the norm at the start of the bruising second half action as both teams knew this was the time to either build up a comfortable lead or cut down the opponent’s advantage to manageable levels.

Amigos sentinels Jed and John Mantua continued to puncture the hoops and supported behemoth center Pat Pilae. But the Hawkmen slowly and surely crept their way back into the game with twisting lay-ups from the peppery guard Redmond Policarpio 4 points, T-dog Tandog, Fil-Aussie Josh Mcdonald 8 points and a rim rattling dunk from Jeff Peak 4 points to come to within a 28-31 score.

But being the King Lions of the jungle, the Amigos five kept their composure and with spiritual leader and captain Cromwell Alvarez orchestrating the tempo, held off the JayHawks as he made the crucial foul throws to seal the game and the championship, 36-30.

Individual MVP awards went to Anthony Cogan [Eliminations] and Reubert Tandog [Grand Finals]. Kirk Martinez of the Belmore Club topped the 3-points shooting contest.
