Filipinos four fall from grace

Filipino bantamweight Percy Samson had the crowd on its feet cheering to the final bell in an exciting four-round boxing main event against scrappy Australian Dean Livanos, but he lost by decision.

Another Filipino, super-bantamweight Jun-Mar Dulog, was cut above the eye by a headbutt and lost by split decision to Australia’s Jackson Asiku in another four-rounder.

Samson and Dulog were two of four Filipinos fighting on the same boxing card at Wyong Rugby Club north of Sydney last Friday night.

Lightweight Roel Mangan lost another split decision to Australian William Kickett in yet another wild and exciting four round bout.

Welterweight Ariel Omongos was the lone Filipino not to go the distance, unable to leave his corner for the fourth and final round against Australia’s Fatai Onikeke. Omongos had run out of steam after three rounds and was forced to retire.

”The hall was packed, ” said Dido Bohol, manager of Bohol Boxing Stable which trains Dulog, Mangan and Omongos. Samson is trained by Filipino-born Arnel Barotillo, former IBF Inter-Continental super-bantamweight champion.

”Our boys had a lot of support from the crowd, but I didn’t see any Filipinos there. Perhaps it was due to a lack of publicity on the fighters.”
