Condoms blamed for AIDS, RP with lower incidence

The statements made this morning by Cardinal Pell, head of the Catholic Church in Australia, made quite a stir.

Cardinal Pell was reported saying that he agreed with Pope Benedict XVI that condoms were aggravating the African AIDS epidemic by encouraging promiscuity.

SMH which reported the story had received more than 150 comments since it printed the story this morning. That’s a big number considering that today is a public holiday, being Good Friday.

It would be interesting to watch if Cardinal Pell will come out with clarification of his statements. A number of the commenters did not speak highly of him and Pope Benedict for the statements.

Interestingly, Cardinal Pell compared the incidence of AIDS in the Philippines, a Catholic country, and Thailand.

He was quoted as saying ‘If you look at the Philippines you’ll see the incidence of AIDS is much lower than it is in Thailand which is awash with condoms. There are condoms everywhere and the rate of infection is enormous.’ #
