It was the third consecutive win for the Austral-Asian Golf club of Melbourne whose seven (7) select golfers garnered the highest accumulated points for four days during the 15th Interstate Friendship Golf Cup held in Manila on March 3-6, 2009.
The host club, the 40Love of Darwin, NT, who is new to the circuit but with a very strong selection of golfers, could not come close but promise to do better next year. Pinoy golfers of Brisbane won the third day but still not enough to catch up with the champion.

Individual over-all champion was Tony Magnaye from Melbourne. This was followed by Edwin Quaionza also from Melbourne, as 1st runner up. Individual daily winners for grades A & B were also declared and awarded trophies.
For the first time, Ladies division was recognized and presented with trophies as there were five lady participants. The champion was Denise Chin from Melbourne followed by Jean Berces from ACT as runner up.
This year the Interstate Friendship golf cup was played in four championship golf courses for four consecutive days.
These are the Forest Hills (Tues), Tagaytay Midlands (Wed), Ayala Greenfields (Thurs) and on the final day (Friday), Orchard Golf & Country club. All these golf courses are of international championship standards, private and very exclusive golf clubs.
They are all fitted with five-star lockers rooms where the golfers could store their valuables and have their hot showers after playing.
The awards presentation and early dinner took place at Orchard Golf Club, Palmer Hall with buffet dinner consisting of Filipino food and delicacies to the sumptuous delight of all the participants and guests.
Everyone was all praised for the setting, food and the program presentation coordinated by the host club, the 40Love of Darwin, NT.
Highlight of the program includes welcome remarks by representatives of 40Love of Darwin, presentations of team participants by state/territory president or captain, presentation of souvenirs and giveaways to all participants, presentation of plaque of appreciation to the coordinator and awarding of trophies to individual winners (daily & overall) as well as the state champion.
The final number was the closing remarks by Ric de Vera (Fil-Oz and coordinator of the event), who congratulated the host club for successfully hosting the 15th Interstate Friendship golf cup, thanking all states & territories for their participation, wishing them well in their trip back home and inviting them again for next year’s 16th series of this now considered the biggest Filipino-Australian delegation to play golf in the Philippines.
Likewise, he congratulated the winners of this year’s tournament. Two raffle prizes were drawn out of the evaluation forms submitted consisting of one golf package worth $300 and accommodation worth $300 to be used at next years event, donated by Travelaccess, the official travel agent.
The 15th Interstate Friendship golf cup has the highest participants with eighty six (86) golfers coming from Victoria (26), Australian Capital Territory (20), Northern Territory (18), New South Wales (8), Western Australia (8) and Queensland (6).
On top of these, there were ten companions or relatives/guests who joined the group during the awards presentation and dinner. Accommodations were booked at Executive Plaza Hotel, a boutique but clean and centrally located in Ermita, Manila.
Sponsors solicited by the host club include T & M Concretors P/L, Gwelo Developments P/L, PTM Homes P/L, Curby’s Trophies & Engraving, Haigh’s Fencing & Power Coating, Michelle Café, Humes, CEMEX, Darwin Radiators, Franvic Autos, Sports Agencies (MNT) P/L, Best Bar Darwin, Waco Kwikform, Greyline IT Consulting P/L, Dr Christopher Bruce Burns, MLA, Phil Hon Consul to NT and Greg Wingard all from Darwin, NT.

As a result, giveaways such as t-shirts, key chain, cold bottle handler and golf towels were given to all participants. The 40Love of Darwin raised the bar of expectations so high and a hard act to follow by the next host club.
Next year’s series would be hosted by Pinoy Golf club of Brisbane headed by Dino Francisco and assisted by Rudy Alladin.
Meanwhile, the 62nd PAL Interclub golf tournament held in Davao City on February 18 to 28, 2009 was comfortably won by Canlubang Golf & Country Club, for both Senior and Mens Regular divisions.
This was the fourth consecutive win by the sugar Barons.
There were more than 1500 golfers who took part in this tournament, now considered the oldest and biggest golf tournament in the Philippines today.
Next year’s event would be held in Cagayan de Oro City. #
