The Filipino Press Club of Sydney (Filpressyd) held its first workshop, “News/Press Release Writing”, with a full complement of six delegates yesterday at the club’s Press/Meeting Room in Rooty Hill’s Corregidor Centre.
The delegates were Ken Ubago, Mitchell Badelles, Richard Ford, Tom Baena, Antonio Malicdem and Dino Crescini.
The three-hour session which started at 10.00am, interrupted only by an hour for lunch, finished at 2pm with the delegates pining for more time to stay longer for interaction with workshop organiser and club convenor, Jimmy Pimentel.
After the workshop, the delegates were each presented with a ‘Certificate of Attendance’ and welcomed as new club members except for Dino Crescini, who is already a member.
Following a previously circulated module, the workshop started with a discussion on ‘Public Relations’, followed by the roles of a ‘Public Relations Officer/Director’ and a ‘Press Relations Officer’.
The session then took in discussion and exercises on the different types of writing for the media, and dealing mostly with the elements and accepted standards of writing straight news/hard copy and press releases for submission to Australian media.
The second workshop catering to young aspiring writers will be held at the next club meeting on 29 March with Michelle Baltazar as presentor.
On other Filpress projects: Jimmy Pimentel also emailed in to report that the club’s ‘Press Room’ is now ready for building the proposed Rizal Library for the club’s Filipiniana section at one corner of the room. When completed, the library will be the first library in Australia outside the government library system with an exclusively Philippine collection of books, CDs and DVDs on Filipino culture past and present. Book donors can contact Jimmy Pimentel using this site’s Message Board for more details.
I would like to ask if there are any workshops that will be conducted this year about journalism/media and do we have to reserve or pay for reservation in case there will be one.
Ashley:
Members of Filpressyd (Filipino Press Group of Sydney) hold workshops on journalism during the year. The next workshop will be on Press Release Writing (again). It will be held in May, at a day and venue to be announced soon. It is free of charge.
Please send an email address so we can reach you when the day and venue are set.
Thank you for your interest.
