Charges laid over alleged internet threat
Tuesday, November 13th, 2007Detectives have charged a man over an alleged threat against a western Sydney high school.
Police attached to St Marys Local Area Command initiated an investigation following reports that a threatening message was allegedly posted on an internet site last week.
NSW Police, with the assistance of international authorities and the NSW Department of Education, conducted a number of inquiries, which today resulted in the arrest of a 30-year-old man as he arrived on a flight from Melbourne.
The man, from North Parramatta, was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was interviewed by is detectives He’s been charged with use a carriage service to menace. The man has been refused bail and is due to appear in Waverley Local Court.
North West Metro Region Commander, A/Assistant Commissioner Robert Redfern, has issued a warning to anyone considering making similar threats. “Online threats of any nature are treated very seriously by police, and anyone who thinks they can hide anonymously behind a computer and make threats of violence is seriously mistaken as NSW Police can, and will, find anyone who breaks the law in cyberspace,” Assistant Commissioner Redfern said.
“Any threat of violence against students or teachers is a serious breach of the law and will be treated accordingly.
“Officers and specialist units will act swiftly to investigate, regardless of whether the threat is made directly or via the internet, and NSW Police won’t hesitate to lay charges against any person suspected of making such threats, even if the perpetrator considers their actions to be a prank.
“I would like to commend officers attached to St Marys Local Area Command and all involved agencies who acted quickly to locate the alleged source of the internet posting and affect an arrest,” said A/Assistant Commissioner Redfern. / NSW Police Media
