Operation Drink Drive 2 – police arrest 40 people

Police have caught 40 people driving whilst under the influence of alcohol on the first day of the state-wide ‘Operation Drink Drive 2′.

Operation Drink Drive is held twice a year in the lead up to the Easter and Christmas periods and targets those people driving whilst affected by alcohol in both metropolitan and regional areas.

Police yesterday conducted 21,475 breath tests up to midnight and 40 people were caught drink-driving.

The operation will continue over the weekend. Traffic Services Commander Chief Superintendent John Hartley said he was pleased that many people seemed to be getting the message that drink-driving was a crime.

“But 40 people caught drink-driving is 40 too many,” Chief Superintendent Hartley said.

“Drivers need to realise that if they get behind the wheel after drinking they are putting the lives of themselves and other innocent road users at risk.

“We will continue to tirelessly target these drivers over the weekend, and beyond Operation Drink Drive 2, to get these selfish motorists off the road.”

Some of yesterday’s results included:

- A 23-year-old man was stopped at Tathra Road, Bega, and allegedly had a blood-alcohol reading of 0.205. He was also found to be unlicensed and was driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.

- A 48-year-old man was charged with high-range drink driving after other motorists saw a four-wheel-drive allegedly driving erratically on Hillcrest Road, Quakers Hill, before mounting a gutter then colliding with another car. The driver had an alleged blood-alcohol reading of 0.215.

- A 19-year-old Provisional 2 driver was stopped on King Street, Newtown, after being detected driving an alleged 81km/h in the 80km/h zone. A breath test revealed an alleged blood-alcohol reading of 0.090. / NSW Police Media
